“Learn Russian” can mean reading Cyrillic, introducing yourself, travelling independently, or discussing unfamiliar topics. These are different outcomes. A useful plan moves from prepared production to flexible response rather than waiting for one final fluency date.
Introduce yourself, explain why you are learning, and use a recovery phrase.
Practise: This is narrow enough to rehearse immediately.
Handle recurring exchanges such as a café, transport, or workplace greeting.
Practise: Build several complete scripts, then vary the details.
Follow unfamiliar speech, choose grammar in real time, and repair misunderstandings.
Practise: This grows through sustained exposure, feedback, and repeated speaking.
Useful Russian phrases and speaking cues
Say each complete phrase, read what it does in the conversation, and use the speaking cue to make the important sound or rhythm clearer.
A realistic beginning-to-end conversation
Read both roles once. Then cover the “You” turns and produce your own reply before checking the example.
Prepare for the question that changes the script

Make the next reply easier to produce
- Track observable actions: a question you understood, a reply you produced, or a misunderstanding you repaired. Time spent alone does not show speaking readiness.
- Repeat the same conversation with changed details and follow-ups. Flexibility grows when the structure is familiar but the exact turn is not.
- Keep pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and listening tied to a conversation milestone. This makes review more useful than an unrelated list.
